Germans drinking less beer by the year
Germans are drinking less beer. Last year a total of 8 billion litres of the foaming liquid was consumed, against 8.3 billion litres in 2011, the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden reported on Thursday.
The figure translates to 22 million litres of beer drunk per day in a population of 81 million, implying that every German, whether man, woman, child or baby, drinks on average a little over a quarter of a litre a day.
The statistics include beer mixtures, such as beer with lemonade, but not alcohol-free beers.
Bavaria has far and away the most breweries at 616, or more than half the German total. (dpa)
