Beverage carton industry wins national accolade for UK recycling facility

The Alliance for Beverage Cartons & the Environment (ACE) UK is the proud winner of a UK Packaging Award.

20-Nov-2014 - United Kingdom

‘CSR Initiative of the Year’ was awarded in recognition of ACE UK’s efforts to improve the environmental and economic case for beverage carton recycling with the opening of the UK’s first purpose-built carton recycling facility in September 2013.

Capable of recycling up to 40% (25,000 tonnes) of the cartons manufactured each year for the UK food and drink market, the facility is expected to significantly boost recycling rates.

Beverage cartons collected in 38% of local authority areas are already being recycled at the facility which is a joint initiative between ACE UK – representing leading cartons manufacturers Tetra Pak, Elopak and SIG Combibloc – and paper and packaging producer Sonoco Alcore.

Richard Hands, Chief Executive of ACE UK, was presented with the Award at a ceremony at the London Hilton, Park Lane, on 12th November.

“The number of UK local authorities collecting beverage cartons at kerbside for recycling has increased more than ten-fold in the last six years, and this facility has the potential to take collection to a new level”, he said.

“We are delighted to win this prestigious award, which is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our members to grow carton recycling by making it even easier for the consumer”.
