The European Commission announced Friday that a Bavarian variety of ripe cheese has been granted protected status.
Obazda, also known as Obatzter, is a cheese spread made by crushing and mixing a ripe cheese, like Camembert or Brie, butter, paprika powder and salt. The spread can now use the seal of a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and can take legal action against any producers from outside the region that make a similar product.

The spread, the name of which comes from the Bavarian dialect word obatzn meaning to mix, "has a long tradition in Bavaria and has accordingly become an integral part of the Bavarian beer garden culture," the commission said in a statement conferring PGI status.
"The denomination will be added to the list of more than 1,200 products already protected," it said. (dpa)
