The European Commission announced Friday that a Bavarian variety of ripe cheese has been granted protected status.

The spread, the name of which comes from the Bavarian dialect word obatzn meaning to mix, "has a long tradition in Bavaria and has accordingly become an integral part of the Bavarian beer garden culture," the commission said in a statement conferring PGI status.
"The denomination will be added to the list of more than 1,200 products already protected," it said. (dpa)
