The EU competition authorities announced in Brussels on Tuesday evening that companies had been searched unannounced in several EU countries on suspicion of illegal agreements. The employees of the EU Commission were accompanied by representatives of the national competition authorities.
The Brussels authority did not provide any further details. Unnounced inspections are a first step in the suspicion of restrictive business practices. The investigation was not a preliminary conviction. The EU Commission is not subject to any time limits in cartel investigations. In some cases, the investigations take years.
Salmon is one of the favourite fish of consumers in Germany. In 2017, the per capita consumption of fish in Germany was 14.2 kilograms according to the Fish Information Centre in Hamburg. Alaska pollack, herring and tuna are still in the top places. Germany imports large quantities of salmon from aquacultures in Norway. (dpa)
