The Protein Brewery completes pilot plant
First food grade production samples delivered
The Protein Brewery
Fermotein™
TPB uses innovative fermentation technologies to produce food proteins that can replace animals in the food chain. Our hero product is Fermotein™, a food ingredient with an excellent nutritional value. Using very little land and water contributes to a very sustainable profile. Fermotein™ can be produced from a large variety of globally available crops such as cassava, corn, potatoes, sugar cane and sugar beet, resulting in local, scalable and efficient processes worldwide.
Certified brewing process
The pilot plant has been designed to facilitate the full process of producing Fermotein™. At a scale of hundred kg per day, the pilot plant is equipped to handle raw materials, the brewing process, downstream processing, formulation and packaging. After the initial start-up in March 2021, operations were ready to be audited for food safety in April, resulting in an ISO 22000:2018 certification for TPB’s full operations.
Production trials
Since completing the development, installation and certification of the operations, batches of Fermotein™ have been delivered to various business partners. These partners, mostly international food producers, use the samples for evaluation and development purposes and production trials. Additionally, building, testing and running the pilot plant has provided the data for both the preferred equipment and engineering parameters for the design of our commercial demo plant.
Wim de Laat, founder of The Protein Brewery:
“After years of intensive research and tests in the laboratory, we started our route to the commercialization of protein products made by fermentation technologies in 2020. I am very proud that, together with the team, we have been able to successfully enter the next phase: produce Fermotein™ in a scalable way. It enables our customers, global food developers, to test our product and make it ready for worldwide consumption. With the US approval process for Fermotein™ as a food ingredient on track, we are ready to further explore our first market and demonstrate our food ingredient in various food products such as meat and fish replacers, vegan snacks and many more.”
Food Experience Center
Simultaneously with building the pilot plant, the Food Experience Center (FEC) has been developed. In the FEC, which will be officially opened in June, guest chefs will demonstrate the possibilities of TPB’s Fermotein™ as a food ingredient in various tasty dishes.
Demo Plant development
In the meantime, all preparations to build TPB’s first, commercial demo plant are on track. The process of selecting a venue to develop a full-scale production site in the Brabant region in the Netherlands has been narrowed down to three promising locations. Production is anticipated to start in the first half of 2022 taking our easy-to-operate brewing process to the next level.
