Meat production declines again in Germany
Production of meat in Germany declined in 2021 for the fifth year in a row, according to data released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Monday.
Commercial slaughterhouses produced 7.6 million tons of meat last year, a decline of 2.4% compared to 2020, the agency reported.
Meat production in Germany has been in decline since 2017.
A total of 56.2 million pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and horses as well as 605.8 million chickens, turkeys and ducks were killed in German slaughterhouses in 2021, the statisticians said.
In the case of pork, which accounts for the largest share of commercial meat production at about two-thirds, the quantity fell by 2.9% year on year to just under 5 million tons. Almost 51.8 million pigs were slaughtered.
The quantity of beef also fell by 1.8% to just under 1.1 million tons, for which more than 3.2 million cattle were killed. (dpa)
