New German mulled wine queen likes it hot
Sarah Schmitt, Germany's newly crowned queen of mulled wine, likes her drinks hot. "My favourite mulled wine is made with Riesling, with cinnamon and oranges and a little bit of sugar added," the 20-year-old winegrower's daughter said after her coronation on Tuesday in Trier.
Dressed in dirndl and tiara, Sarah is to promote mulled wine during the advent and Christmas period. She is the fifth queen to do so.
However, she does not care much for the low-quality variety of mulled wine available in many supermarkets.
"Many people think that mulled wine is always sweet and sticky, and that you will have a bad hangover next day," says the food technology student from Konz, near Trier, in western Germany.
This was not the case with higher-quality mulled wine produced by winegrowers. "You shouldn't get a headache from that if you don't overdo it," she said.
She does not plan on drinking more than one mug of mulled wine at a time. "Then I switch to the (alcohol-free) children's version," she says.
The mulled wine queen is officially crowned on November 24 at the Trier Christmas market. (dpa)
