Association: Italy's Prosecco exports at record level

20-Jul-2021 - Italy

Italy has exported more Prosecco than ever before in the first four months of this year, according to association figures. More than 120 million bottles (0.75 liters each) were delivered by the companies during this period, the Italian agricultural association Coldiretti announced on Saturday. That was a 17 percent increase over the same period last year. In Germany, the Italian Prosecco exporters in this period comparison recorded the strongest increase in sales with 29 percent. The largest customer, however, was the USA.

In Great Britain, the association noted a decline of nine percent during this period. The association attributed this to the bureaucratic hurdles in connection with Brexit. For sparkling wine exporters, there are problems with customs procedures, it said. The association fears that this could allow counterfeit Prosecco to enter the market in the UK.

Prosecco is a designation of origin protected by the EU for Italian sparkling or semi-sparkling wines. Recently, Croatia's attempt to have its local white wine Prosek protected as a designation by the EU caused trouble. Italy wants to defend itself against this, because the designation is clearly in conflict with the name Prosecco, according to the accusation. There was even talk of a "Prosecco war". In 2013, Croatia had already failed with a similar attempt./jon/DP/zb (dpa)
