Wageningen University & Research tops the QS World Universities ranking by Subject in agriculture & Forestry. In addition, Wageningen is the best university in the Netherlands for Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Development Studies.

The overview of best universities in the QS Top Universities Ranking’s 46 fields is largely dominated by American and British universities. But this year for the second time, Wageningen has been deemed the best university in the world for Agriculture & Forestry, ahead of the University of California (UC Davis, USA) and Cornell University (USA). In other words, the QS Ranking puts Wageningen University & Research among the world’s elite institutes in the Life Sciences domain.

This year, Wageningen dropped from fourth to six place in the field of Environmental Sciences. Despite this, it is still one of the best in the world. This is partly due to the high H index in this field, for which Wageningen achieved the maximum score for Environmental Sciences (100%). The H index is a measurement used to rate productivity and the importance of publications. Environmental Sciences at Wageningen tops the Dutch national tables.

Development Studies

Wageningen also scored well in Development Studies, coming 13th in the world for the second year running. Development Studies at Wageningen also leads the pack in the Netherlands.

Biological Sciences at Wageningen is in the top 100 worldwide, and the best in the Netherlands.

Reputation and citations

The QS Ranking by Subject 2017 is compiled according to academic reputation, the reputation of the institute among employers, the number of citations per paper and the H index for citations, a measurement used to rate productivity and the importance of publications. Evaluations are based on the opinions of over 76,000 researchers, 44,000 employers, and an analysis of 88.5 million scientific articles and more than 127 million citations.
