Quality problem: Nutella factory in France stops production

22-Feb-2019 - France

The Italian food group Ferrero has temporarily stopped Nutella production at its large plant in northern France due to a lack of quality. No commercially available product is affected by the situation, Ferrero's French subsidiary announced.

The problem was identified on Wednesday evening at the Villers-Écalles factory north-west of Rouen. It concerns a semi-finished product used to make Nutella chocolate cream and Children's Bueno. A company spokeswoman on Thursday did not comment further on details of the quality problem.

The explanation stated that the cessation of production was a precautionary measure. According to the company, the results of an investigation should be available by the end of the week. The plant's customers would continue to be supplied "without interruption".

According to the company, the Nutella factory in Normandy is very large and, with 600,000 glasses per day, supplies around a quarter of Nutella's worldwide production.
